PRESS RELEASE

MARYLAND, USA TO ESTABLISH SISTER RELATIONS WITH BONG AND MARYLAND COUNTIES
WASHINGTON, DC; AUGUST 19, 2007: The State of Maryland USA will on August 24, 2007 sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Republic of Liberia, for a Sister State relationship with Bong and Maryland counties of Liberia. According to the Maryland-Liberia Sister States Committee, the signing ceremony will take place at 10:00 am, at the Governor O'Malley Reception Room in Annapolis, Maryland.
According to a release from the Embassy of Liberia, Washington, DC, the MOU will be signed by Governor Martin O'Malley on behalf of the State of Maryland, and Liberia's Ambassador to the United States Charles Minor, along with the Superintendents of Bong and Maryland Counties, on behalf of the Liberian Government.
The Maryland-Liberia Sister State relationship is strategically chosen to enhance the economic, cultural, and educational interests of the people of the State of Maryland, and Bong and Maryland Counties of Liberia. The Sister States Program provides a forum for economic development, international trade, and increased global understanding. The program will also promote cultural understanding through high schools, colleges, and university exchanges; and additionally, a variety of cultural and athletic exchanges. It is also to promote cooperation and exchange programs for businesses and industry, educational and cultural institutions, transportation, professional development and private citizens.
Liberia is the tenth country for a Sister States Program with the State of Maryland. The City of Baltimore, Maryland in 1973 established sister City relationship with the City of Gbarnga in Liberia. Maryland in Liberia, originally known as Maryland in Africa, was founded by settlers from Maryland, USA. It became a county of Liberia after it joined the Commonwealth of Liberia in 1853.

On Monday, June 18, I attended the Sister State Committee meeting held in Baltimore where it was announced by committee chair, Sharon Pinder that the MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) between the State of Maryland, USA, Maryland County, and Bong County will be officially signed on August 24, 2007 by Superintendents Neufville and Jackson respectively.

I will keep you informed as that date approaches. I am very excited about this historic opportunity being bestowed on our beloved County and Liberia will bring some relief to our people.

Again, I thank WBAL/TV for focusing the spotlight on Maryland County's historic
link to the State of Maryland via the documentary, Africa's Maryland. Indeed, this documentary was instrumental in our quest to reestablish this historic partnership that had been neglected over the years.

I thank Senator John Ballout for all his efforts in advocating the need for a sister state relationship between the State of Maryland and Maryland County during his visit with us last year. He emphasized the importance of our historical ties several times more so by facilitating the visit of the WBAL/TV team to Maryland County to convince everyone that both Maryland have a history that cannot be ignored.

He has proven his dedication to the development of the county and his commitment to our people.

Many thanks to all those who supported us through prayers and words of encouragement. I believe the power of prayer and faith can move any mountain.

Thank you

Roberta Brown
President

Last week I was informed by the chair and co -chair of the sister state committee that it has been approved that Maryland County and Bong County
will equally share  in a relationship with the State of Maryland.

This means that both superintendents will come to Maryland and sign the MOU when everything is finalized.

The senators and superintendent Neufville were informed last week.

I can only say it was a blessing that Africa's Maryland documentary was
shown which was in our favor.
Will keep you posted.
